Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA) is active in the mission of Jasper ELC. The group is open to all women of the church and meets the 4th Thursday afternoon at 2:00 all months except February, August and November. Due to Christmas, the December meeting is held the second Thursday of the month. Each meeting has a business meeting, followed by a program of interest to the group and coffee/fellowship time.
During the course of the year WELCA sponsors several special events, including a Bake Sale/Whatnot Sale in the spring, usually March; and Lefse Bake Days/Autumn Bake Sale in the fall. Quilting for Lutheran World Relief is done the first Monday and Tuesday of most months. Visits are made 2-3 times a year to Sunrise Village in Jasper and each August to Tuff Home in Hills, MN.
The group also coordinates a number of other church activities: Meals on Wheels two months a year; 3 dinners – Soup Supper, Syttende Mai Smorgasbord, and Harvest Supper; working the Pipestone County Food Shelf; and serving the Banquet in Sioux Falls.
In addition to the WELCA activities, 3 circle groups are also active and meet the second Wednesday/Thursday of all months except August and December. The Elizabeth Circle meets at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday; Mary Circle meets at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday; and Martha Circle meets at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Bible Study from the Gather magazine is used by each circle.
The 2015 WELCA officers include president – Sandy Moose; vice president – Shirley Skorr; secretary – Claire Shella; treasurer – Mary Lou Bjugan. Circle chairmen are Edie Aas and Sandy Moose – Elizabeth Circle; Fran Slieter and Barb Westerbur – Mary Circle; and Shirley Swenson and Lorraine Johnson – Martha Circle.
